Lithology and Thickness
Limestone: Sequence of the stratotype (260-280 m total thickness) is as follows. (1). Variegated (violet-red, brown-red, greenish-grey), dark brown weathering, banded, very thin-bedded (some mm to some cm) limestone intcrbcdded with cherty clay shale and clayey limestone, locally with greenish-grey to dark grey clayey limestone lenses, 30-50 m thick. (2). Greenish-grey, brown-grey weathering, banded, thicker-bedded (1-5 cm) limestone interbedded with clayey limestone and cherty marl, 80 m thick. (3). Greyish to pinkish-grey, medium-bedded (20-60 cm) limestone with interbeds of grey limestone, about 80 m thick. (4). Manganese ore seam at the base (10-170 cm thick, in average 70-80 cm), which is relatively stable along strike, grading upwards into greyish, pinkish, thin- to medium-bedded, weakly recrystallized limestone, locally interbedded with darker-colored limestone, 70 m thick. The total thickness of the formation in this section reaches about 260-280 m. Variegated limestone, which is characteristic for the Upper Devonian, but its lithology can vary in space. It usually occurs in narrow bands as the uppermost part of the section in all distribution areas of the Devonian.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In both the Ha Lang area (East Bac Bo) and the Van Yen area (West Bac Bo), the Toe Tat Fm rests conformably upon the Bang Ca Fm.
Upper contact
In the Ha Lang area (East Bac Bo), it is covered unconformably by the Lung Nam Fm. In the Van Yen area (West Bac Bo) it is overlain by the Da Nieng Fm.
Regional extent
In East Bac Bo it occurs in the Trung Khanh District (Cao Bang Province), and in the Dong Van Plateau (Ha Giang Province). In West Bac Bo, it is exposed in narrow bands in the lower course of the Da River (in the Van Yen area, Son La Province.
